In England, one of the alleged scourges of modern life is that you get free plastic bags from shops and they never rot down, so that wales in the ocean choke to death on them.  Of course, everybody reuses their bags to put rubbish in in the bin, but that is by the by.  Our Co-op began producing two types of free carrier bag that were meant to be an improvement; one that rots eventually, and one that is completely compostable.  This coincided with the council’s introduction of food waste bins, into which you could only put compostable bags if you wanted to bag up the food waste, which they provided some to start you off.  Asking at the co-op for the compostable bags, which I hadn’t seen in a while, I discovered that ‘people took too many’ so they charge 6p each.  So of course, I took the non-compostable free bag instead…
