The recipe said to use plum tomatoes and sieve the seeds and bits out.  I figured it would be easier to open a carton of passata, which is pre-sieved tomatoes.  I used bought stock, and added sugar, salt, pepper and herbes de provence.  It was delicious.

I have never made my own croutons before.  I had always assumed it was a faff, but no, it was easy, and the croutons were very nice. I used cut-up milk roll, fried in butter and olive oil.  When the hot croutons were put on the hot soup, they sizzled.
